Our trip 184km north of Melbourne to the green plains of Shepparton was the third pitstop of NECA’s Renewables Revolution Roadshow. A mix of contractors, office staff and many apprentices highlighted the enthusiasm the local community had towards the evening’s topics.
Being in densely populated urban areas I had high hopes for our opening question in Bulleen and Geelong, however it fielded zero response, so you could forgive my expectation that Shepparton would follow suit. I was delighted that I was proven wrong.
That confident voice came from Paul Reilly of Reilly Electrical & Sunvalley Solar, a NECA member and EcoSmart Electrician. His journey from apprentice to business owner in a rural setting had not restricted his foray into new technologies.
Paul started his apprenticeship in 1976 and worked for a number of years with electrical contractors in the rural area and later in electrical maintenance at the local Campbell’s Soups factory.
With a diverse range of experience behind him, Paul and his wife Wendy started PA & WM Reilly Electrical Contractors in 1995 with Paul as the only tradesman for 15 years. Like most electrical contractors, Paul did every type of electrical work he could manage on his own, from residential and schools to shops and high-tech packing shed equipment.
Paul ensured that he did high quality work, gave great service and built good relationships with repeat customers. Eventually the business employed their first apprentice in 2009 and started Sunvalley Solar as a separate solar division in 2010. Solar added a new dimension of customer enquiry and sales and the need to expand the business to include a front office. Reilly
Electrical & Sunvalley Solar now employ three A grades and an apprentice, supported by office staff.
